Thank you to everyone that contacted the organizers of the donkey roping competition that was planned for today in Texas and asked them to cancel. In the contest, held to raise funds for the Marines, donkeys are roped and tormented for “entertainment.” We have been advised that the “benefit” was cancelled but I haven’t seen anything to actually confirm it yet. I hope and pray it is true. When I think about something like that happening to Penny or Penelope or Domino, well, it is just unthinkable!

I’d like to introduce Tia and Tess – a mother and newborn that needed a safe place to land. Tess was born yesterday morning – they arrived at the rescue yesterday evening in the winds and rain. And we had terrible rain and wind storms through the night but they were comfortable in the shelter of the quarantine paddock with hay and forage.

Tess weighs about 30 lbs and has the markings of a Jerusalem donkey – here is a link to the story behind the markings: http://www.mdresort.com/legend-christian-donkey.

Dr. Ryan examined them today and we got some results back this afternoon – the baby’s IGG is good. Whew!

Tia is young herself – maybe four years old. She adores her baby.

The dark you see on mom is rain rot we’ll be treating – she’s lost a good part of her coat on her right side. But the loss is ok because unhealthy coat has to come out so new, healthy coat can come in. And there is some on her legs – some a bit all over. Baby Tess is all legs and ears!

If anyone would like to help sponsor these precious girls please let me know. Have a good night everyone – I’ll be away from the computer until tomorrow afternoon.

Thank you!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Aaleyah Belle is a very special Thoroughbred that was born on the day that Eight Belles lost her life – May 3rd, 2008. Eight Belles crossed the finish line in 2nd place at the Kentucky Derby that day – but in doing so, sadly, she broke both front ankles and was euthanized where she went down. Aaleyah Belle, named in honor of Eight Belles, was born that day with a wry nose and couldn’t nurse. She and her mom were going to be shot if we didn’t help them. After some rehab here at the rescue surgery was performed at UF to correct her nose and she did great. If you don’t know Aaleyah’s story here is a link – https://bhfer.org/aaleyah_diary1.htm. There are 3 parts to her diary that you’ll find links to while reading. Aaleyah overcame so many obstacles – she is a miracle! Here are just a few pictures from her story and diary.

This is Aaleyah, only a few hours old, with Momma Sue on the day they arrived at the rescue.

Aaleyah on her 1st birthday.

Aaleyah Belle – she is beautiful!

Please take time to read Aaleyah’s story. It’s an incredible story of love between three babies (Aaleyah Belle, Buttercup, and Silver Belle) and a mare (Momma Sue) that raised all three of them – and the humans that will always adore them. The story will bring laughter and tears. I know that Momma Sue is always watching over her daughter from above and that she is so very proud of her. Aaleyah is a true blessing to us and taught us that we should never give up!

Happy birthday our lovely Aaleyah Belle – you are loved more than you will ever know!

Sincerely,
Theresa

For Penelope and Penny!

April 29th, 2013

Below is an update that should have gone out yesterday but didn’t – I apologize. I thought I published it but it was still in my “Draft” file.

This update is a little different from my norm – captions to photos are under the photo instead of before. Some of the pictures are from my cell phone so the pictures are not great quality.

Some of our Barbaro family! Today would have been his 10th birthday. He is a true champion, always.

Starlight and Jordan! Starlight is a rescue that we took in a few months ago. She is SO loved and has never had it so good – she is adored!

Jordan and Starlight back at the barn – look at all of those ribbons! Go girls!

Kylie and Roxy exercising horses and having fun at the same time this past Saturday!

Nevada has been just a pasture pal for quite a few weeks now because he was having an issue with muscle in his back left leg. He appeared sound for the last few weeks. Kylie rode him for a little bit at just a walk but cut the ride short because he started favoring that back leg again. He would really benefit from a chiropractic/acupuncture treatment. Would anyone like to help to sponsor this? He will likely need to be adopted out for a light rider doing light work. We’ll give him some more time, and treatments, and see how he does. He’s a very sweet boy.

Ceri is slowly putting on some weight. She’s a very sweet Arabian mare.

CaryLou did ok for his first lead lesson today. He is hysterical!!

What are the babies waiting for? Their mommas are getting antsy!

Ariel has a little bag. 🙂

Strutting again!! It’s hard to take his picture when he is like Velcro!

Penny is going to feel so much better after her clipping!

What a beautiful color she is!

There was an even more darling face under all that hair!

Lucy wants to help!

Penny looks like a different donkey! Thank you Lynda for making this happen!

Check her out – yes that is a heart on her butt! She is so pretty!

Morgan is looking for a forever home.

Solace is doing great.

Lucy is still doing well. She is such a doll!

Have a great week everyone!

Sincerely,
Theresa

We had an emergency with LadyBug this morning. She somehow ripped her left eyelid almost off. She is the mare that lost her right ear to an animal attack a few years ago – just before we took her in. She lives with her foster mom just down the road from the rescue.

The vet cleaned it up good.

It took a few stitches to sew it up. We won’t know for a few days if the flap will be ok or have to come off.

LadyBug isn’t too happy about it and I know she won’t like having the medication put in her eye each day. She will have to see the vet again in a few days. Please pray for a speedy recovery.

We could really use some help with LadyBug’s emergency vet visit/treatment. If anyone would like to help donations can be made via PayPal to address Theresa or via the “Donate” page (https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/index.cfm) on our website. Donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Credits can also be called into the vet’s office at 352-237-6151 (just let them know it’s for LadyBug). Thank you!

The day before the Celebration of Life some of us gathered to place the Memorial Stars around the tree on Frosty’s Knoll. Each point on a star has a name of a beloved Beauty’s Haven horse that has crossed Rainbow Bridge. It’s sad to think of those that have left us but we are very blessed to have had each of them in our life – even if only for a little while.

Each one that has crossed has taken a piece of my heart with them – none of them, not one, will ever be forgotten.

This is Sue on the left standing next to Susan and then Kathy. That’s me and Gabby kneeling down.

Bob and Lynn had prepared the base of the tree for us – they did a great job!

To everyone that donated a point on a star – thank you. Many thanks to Susan and Gabby for making the stars – y’all did a great job – it’s obvious that a lot of love went into preparing them. Now, let’s pray we don’t have to add anymore names for a long time. God bless you all!

Sincerely,
Theresa

I have tried to get out an update since the Celebration – but it’s been one thing after another. Here are a few pictures – I’ll post more as soon as I can.

Minis were everywhere at the Celebration!

This little boy is like a little Energizer bunny – he’s all over the place! It’s hard to believe he has windpipe issues but we are reminded quickly when we hear him sounding like Darth Vader.

“CaryLou you need to stop pestering Lucy so much!" “But mommy Theresa, I like to play!”

"Playing is one thing but the nipping has to stop, ok?"

164906_10200943161922399_2089402707_n.jpg

"But I like to nip too – I’m a baby and it’s called teething!"

63123_10200943165082478_1334045955_n.jpg

"I’m going to talk to my other mommy about this!"

CaryLou wore himself out!

The donkeys explaining why they should get all of the treats…

Classy getting hugs from Susan.

Gabby could not believe how big Genesis is!

Baby Girl – she is so beautiful!

Peaches is still as sweet as ever.

I love this photo!

Adora yesterday – she’s not spoiled. Not at all. LOL!

Woke up to a busted main water line that goes to the pressure tank. Not sure how that could happen. Mark came and helped Bob to fix it. More has to be done over the weekend on something electrical but we have water – whew!

Reese was ultra sounded today and she not pregnant! Whew!

Blackie is doing really well.

We have several mini’s that are due for hooficures that are looking for sponsors…. Anyone?

T-shirt orders were processed yesterday – I apologize for the delay but we were a bit overwhelmed with the Celebration of Life. We are currently out of 2XL but will be placing an order soon. Thanks to everyone that has ordered! http://bhfer.bigcartel.com/. We currently only have Small and Medium left in stock but we are placing another order.

Here is a link to a short video of CaryLou – we gave him a bigger ball in hopes he will quit pestering Lucy so much. Enjoy – guaranteed to make you smile!

There is a full moon tonight and we have two mini mares that we thought would have had their babies by now – Amy and Ariel. We’ll see what the night brings. Please don’t forget that if you have Internet Explorer 10 you can watch our barn cams via https://www.bhfer.org/oldsite/FoalWatch.cfm. The cams are not on MareStare although we hope to get them there soon – but for now we have a different system. Please don’t hesitate to call if anything seems to be happening! 352-258-9309.

Have a good night everyone and please forgive me if I haven’t responded to your email or PM – I’m trying to get caught up but already tomorrow is Friday and I have spent little time in the office.

Sincerely,
Theresa
