Good Luck, Everyone!

Jeanne

We hope everyone is having a great week. We are FINALLY getting some much needed rain – a good time for me to do an update and to share some pictures!

Baby Girl was recently moved into a paddock with Legacy, Nikole, and Classy. Legacy ran to welcome her – he’s quite charming!

And he did a great job – we thought they’d become best friends.

Then Nikole entered the picture and the rest has been history. Baby Girl adores hanging out with Nikole!

MoonShadow is doing better each day – he is quite animated at times now. He’s also pretty vocal. He got a much needed bath this past weekend. He is getting Thrive, a feed that was donated to him. I had the name and phone number of the donor written down and now I can’t find it! If Lisa is reading this – please call me!

Talk about needing a dentist – poor Estrella! The left side was as bad as the right. In the picture on the right below – the left tooth had been taken down to where it should be. Estrella is a very sweet Paso Fino that is looking for a home. She’s here at the rescue and has made friends with Peggy Sue.

The kids share a sprinkler. I’m glad to report that Gentleman is feeling pretty good and carrying himself much better!

Lady Jane – she always looks so regal!

Archer is a tall and strikingly handsome 7 year old Standardbred that is looking for a forever home. He hasn’t been at the rescue long and needs to put on some more weight and he needs to muscle up! But he is a very, very sweet boy that is in your pocket! We don’t think he’s had any training but he will be quick to learn. He’s up to date on everything. His adoption fee is only $200 – that doesn’t cover the amount of funds we have put into his rehab. But then again, it isn’t about money. It’s about the horse and the right forever home.

Colostrum we ordered from Rood & Riddle arrived today so we’re good there. Lacey and her baby are keeping us all waiting on a healthy and happy delivery.

Please don’t forget about the fundraiser – Lacey’s breeding date was June 11th, 2012.

And don’t forget about our Celebration of Life event which is to be held on May 27th here at the rescue. Please RSVP me at bhfer if you plan to attend!

And now we’re off to the City Council meeting where our daughter, Katie, is being presented an award for being high school student of the month!

Thank you all for your continued support – without you we couldn’t do what we do!

Sincerely,
Theresa

We have not yet been able to find colostrum for Lacey’s yet to be born baby. We thought we had some but it didn’t work out.

Someone had emailed me a link to a colostrum replacer that could be bought online and I can’t find it. Does anyone have the link? I’d like to order today with overnight delivery. If you have the info please email me at bhfer.

Thanks!
Theresa

Last night was another calm night for MoonShadow which his good. He’s a good boy and is becoming more animated each day!

I think we’re over the hump and he’s going to be just fine! This was taken yesterday.

I’m going to take my Popper dog to the vet. She was hit by a truck a few months ago and broke both back legs and dislocated her hip. With a couple of surgeries (and help from several people that cared and helped with the expenses and kept her in prayers) and weeks of rehab she recovered and has been doing well.

Until today. She was going to go with me to the barn and when she went down the stairs she almost fell. She can’t go up the stairs. Her back legs aren’t working right – it’s like they move together at the same time vs. one and then the other. But when she walks she is ok. Hopefully it’s nothing that can’t be fixed. Please pray for my Popper. She is only a year old.

Thank you.

Popper cooling off after playing last week in one of the waterers.

Last night was a calm night and today was a good day for MoonShadow. He was a bit more vocal which is always nice to hear.

And now we pray for another calm night. We’re beat and need some sleep!

May 1st, 2012…

First I want to share some pictures of others here at the rescue.

Gentleman chasing Peaches. It’s the first time I’ve seen him move out this fast in months! Peaches was just moved to this paddock – she swapped paddocks with Nikole.

Gentleman looks like a brindle color since he got clipped – and yes, that is a heart on his butt! He is much more comfortable since he was clipped.

Lady Jane is doing very well. She is a social butterfly and a very sweet mare. She carries herself very proudly.

Legacy – as handsome as ever. Princess is behind him.

Classy is doing well. Her front feet have been holding up good.

And Peggy Sue – she is such a doll! She absolutely adores attention and will wrap herself around you for hugs! The stifle surgery definitely helped.

Magic taking a rest.

And Lacey – she is still rolling and waiting for her baby to decide to join the outside world.

Today was a pretty good one for MoonShadow. We have learned that his registered name is “Salty Verdict.” I think the GastroGard is helping. He did better through last night and actually drank about 2 gallons of water which made me very happy. And he was hungry this am. His body temp stayed within normal range today.

This is truly a tragic case but hopefully it will have a good ending – or new start – depending on how you look at it. This is MoonShadow – the picture on the left taken February 7th just a couple of days before he went to the people we got him from. In just a matter of 2 ½ months this is what happened to him – see picture on the right.

I did some backtracking with information I did have on him and had some luck. One phone call actually led to a couple of families from his past. Both families came today to visit with him and were very upset to see him in this condition. It’s heartbreaking too see a horse in this condition – especially a horse that you loved and thought was going to a good home. I’m glad he was feeling somewhat better today – he was a tiny bit more active and alert.

This family owned him for many years after he retired from the track after his first and only race. They brought him gifts today and spent some time with him.

I don’t know if MoonShadow is out of the woods yet. I think I can more comfortably answer that question by the end of the week. I know that today he was a little vocal and his eyes were brighter – he held his head up a little higher. I know it sounds silly but his eyes actually spoke to me and it was comforting.

Please continue to keep MoonShadow in your prayers. Once he is feeling better we need to have his left stifle x-rayed and he’ll need chiropractic/acupuncture. He needs his teeth done and his feet worked on a bit more. God bless – have a wonderful day tomorrow! Thank you all for your continued support!

MoonShadow had a fairly good night. He didn’t drink much but he did eat up his all of his alfalpha.

This picture was taken yesterday. He had us really worried.

This morning he’s out munching on his hay. The blood work from yesterday wasn’t much different than from the initial tests done. We won’t be out of the woods for several more days. I’m still worried about refeeding syndrome – what he was fed before we picked him up. I feel a little better each day but only time will tell.

I did learn more information about Moon Shadow that I will share in an update later today – I need to get back to the barn to finish feeding. I will tell you that his registered name is Salty Verdict – not “Salt”. He ran 1 race at Tampa Bay downs where he finished 10th. Thank all of you for caring about this wonderful boy. Please keep MoonShadow in your prayers and have a blessed day.

MOON SHADOW UPDATE

Yesterday, Moon Shadow was down a lot throughout the day and last night. He did not drink through the night and he has no interest in eating this morning. His body temperature is also decreasing. Dr. Ryan has been called out to the farm and I will update as soon as we have additional information.

Please keep this precious boy in your Prayers.

Jeanne

I checked on MoonShadow through the night last night and each time I did he was resting. But in the morning sun I was happy to find him up and looking at the barn. It’s amazing how quickly they learn where food comes from. His refeeding program is a slow process. One of my biggest concerns is what may have been fed to him, and how much, before we picked him up yesterday. I am sorry to say that based on new information, I think that Twilight may have been fed to death. Or perhaps it was a combination of she was too far gone when her last owner took possession of her and then she was fed too much too soon. We’ll never know. In any event, it was a tragic situation and I just hope and pray we get through the next couple of weeks ok with MoonShadow.

He’s really thin – almost as bad as Twilight. And if he were body clipped you would see how thin he is.

He has rain rot and is sore all over.

You can see at the end of the crescent moon the dent in his skull. It doesn’t seem to hurt him when I touch it.

He has an issue in his back left and there are some recent scars along that leg. We may have to have x-rays done of his left stifle – he can’t put weight on that back left leg but for a few seconds at a time.

No fat. No muscle.

Hopefully, he found his way to us in time. And Twilight was his guide – may she find comfort knowing that he is here.

His feet were done today but need more work. MoonShadow was so weak that he could not stand longer than a few seconds on any foot. The podiatrist will be back next week to trim some more.

I really couldn’t get any good angles in photos to show how thin he really is but I tried. I couldn’t brush the unhealthy hair off – he was too sore in some areas.

He is truly a sweetheart. We want him to have some down time for a couple of days. Hopefully next week we can have his teeth done – his mouth has many ulcerations in it that we can see. I don’t want to think about the ones we can’t see.

He held his head a tiny bit higher today. And there seemed to be a little more light in his eyes. I don’t know if he will make it or not but we will do everything possible to help him. And we are only able to do this because others care. God bless all of you that are helping with his care costs and by keeping him in prayers and sharing his story. He has a long road ahead of him. We invite you to join us on his path to recovery. We’ll be posting updates so everyone can keep up with his progress. And if you’re in our area stop in and visit. See what your donations are doing – how you are helping us to help the horses.

We are not sure that the “Salt” we found data on is this horse. Tomorrow we will to read the tattoo again. The “Salt” we found data on is a chestnut and this horse is a bay. We need to do more research. But it doesn’t change anything – Twilight’s MoonShadow has had a terrible life for quite awhile. When I think about how cold and hungry he must have been in the cold months – even recently when it went down to 38 degrees at night – it makes me very sad. When I think about him watching Twilight wither away to nothing, likely wondering if that too would be his fate, I get sick. No horse deserves this. Ever.

I’m very glad he is here with us. I pray that he recovers – please keep him in your prayers too.
