Shai had been “living” in a very small pen with several goats and a steer. She was seized during a cruelty investigation. This mare’s needs were neglected for quite some time. She is shy, untrusting, and afraid of humans. She literally shakes with fear.

Our Christmas present to her was a safe place to land and a promise that she will never be neglected or mistreated again.

Shai has had a very rough life but she has us now – the Beauty’s Haven family. She needs sponsors for her initial and ongoing care, no amount is too small.

On Friday morning, when the mare and baby loaded up to come to the rescue, Momma knew – they always do – she walked right onto the trailer. Upon arrival, they both settled in nicely. Sadly, Baby is very weak.

Dr. Pulliam arrived shortly thereafter and examined Momma and her baby. Blood and other tests were performed. Both received fluids and the baby received a vitamin cocktail – she was such a good girl. We did a glove sand test on the Momma and discovered that there is quite a bit of sand in her manure which was not at all surprising. There is a concern about the sweet feed which they were fed the past few days prior to their arrival at Beauty’s Haven which could have a negative impact. Both are receiving supplements to help with ulcers, their GI tract and immune system.

The baby is in very poor condition, scoring less than a 1 on the Body Condition Scoring Scale, but we choose to be cautiously optimistic that she will pull through. We’re not sure how she has managed to survive.

She does have a good size hernia that will need to be addressed once she is considerably more healthy. Momma has little to no milk to offer and is also in poor condition. We’ll see what the blood work and other test results reveal today and provide an update as soon as possible. Momma and Baby have, and will continue to be, watched around the clock. The baby had not been handled before we met her on Thursday, but she has been a very brave little girl.

This baby needs a miracle, but here, at Beauty’s Haven, we believe in miracles and have experienced many in past years. She also has to have a strong will to live – it’s amazing that she is still standing.

We have named the mare Sophia, and the baby’s name is Candace.

If anyone would like to help it would be so greatly appreciated. Contributions can be made via the ‘Donate’ button below. Please designate your donation to ‘Sophia & Candace.’ Please also note that another wonderful friend and supporter has offered a second $500 Match Game, whereby, all donations up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar. If you are not in a position to donate at this time, we truly understand, but you can still help by sharing this email amongst family and friends.

It’s been a very long and exhausting day. We have an urgent need at hand – a foal who is in a very bad way. Her mama is also in bad shape and gets irritated if the baby tries to nurse as she has little to no milk to offer. The baby has bite marks on her little body and a hernia that needs to be surgically repaired. When I visited yesterday, I about lost it when I saw her stagger over and attempt to eat weeds as well as leaves off a tree.

With ribs protruding, these horses’ obvious lack of nutrition, especially protein, is evident by their low, big bellies. Ulcers and parasites are likely, contributing factors to their poor condition as well.

The baby’s dull coat, glassy eyes, slow movements, loss of hair, dullness, diarrhea, and large abdomen say it all – she’s starving to death.

Starvation causes the body to use up its body stores of fat, muscle, and then organs. It causes weakness, impairs gut function, wound healing, and affects the overall immune system. Internal organs atrophy. Bone growth can also be impacted in young horses. It’s a horrible thing.

Thankfully, someone cared enough to do something when they saw these two precious horses and made a call to county authorities. It’s an open case but we were given the okay to pick up the mare and baby this morning. We did make certain that they had enough hay to last through the night. Please – we need your help to help them. They deserve a chance.

The baby, about three months old, hasn’t known a good day in her short life, but you can help us change that.

Vetting is going to be costly. They need everything – blood tests, fecal exams, the mare will need dental work. They both need to see the farrier. And just as important, they need financial support for as long as they are here. They are Thoroughbreds.

I’m deeply concerned about the financial assistance we need for these horses. Donations continue to be down since the arrival of COVID and we still haven’t raised enough funds to pay the farrier bill. We need a ton of orchard hay for the herd ($600+) today and we will need alfalfa as well. The utility vehicle broke down yesterday with a cost of $376 to repair. There are so many things that need to be addressed, but we just cannot walk away from this mare and baby – time is simply not on their side.

If anyone would like to help Baby & Mama, it would be so greatly appreciated. Contributions can be made via the ‘Donate’ button below. Please designate your donation to ‘Baby & Mare.’ Please also note that there is currently a $500 Match Game in progress, whereby all donations up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar.

P.S. Some of you may remember baby Tonka. He was in about the same condition when we brought him and his mom to the rescue many years ago. Sadly, it was too late for Tonka. We pray we’re not too late for this little girl. If you don’t know about Tonka, here is a video in his memory:

Our newest arrival, Belle, is a 20 year old Tennessee Walking Horse. She did have a baby last year, but it was her last. Belle had been wearing a halter for the last 18 years and as a result, her hair beneath it has turned gray. After I removed Belle’s halter, she literally hugged me! Belle is significantly underweight and she needs everything – an intake exam, bloodwork, farrier and dental care, deworming, vaccinations, etc. She also needs help with her routine ongoing care, so if anyone would like to sponsor her on a monthly basis, it would be so greatly appreciated.

A very special friend and supporter has come forth to offer a most thoughtful and generous Match Game for Belle, whereby all donations up to $500 will be matched dollar for dollar. If you would like to participate, donations may be forwarded by clicking on the ‘Donate’ button below. If there is a place in which to designate your donation, please note ‘Match Game for Belle.’

Thank you, all, for your love and support which allows us to help horses like sweet Belle.

This is how we ended our night last night, helping this little girl. She was wandering along the side of the road, alone, thin, hungry and in pain. Her front paw is nearly severed and the smell of infection is extreme. She may have gotten her foot caught in something and had to chew her way out. We’ll never know. She’s as sweet as sweet can be and she truly, deserves a chance. We have named her Kiah.

Kiah was rushed to UF in the wee hours of the morning and has undergone many tests, but the vet said it is most likely she will need to have her foot amputated. Hopefully, the infection can be successfully treated. It’s estimated that Kiah is about a year old.

We hate having to repeatedly ask for help, but we must. UF has estimated her bill to be between $3K to $4K but they will try to keep it at the lower end ($3K). Can anyone help us help Kiah? If so, please click on the ‘Donate’ button below. All donations are so greatly appreciated and no amount is ever too small.

I would like to introduce our latest Beauty’s Haven rescue, Scooter. He’s only about four years old and sadly, he has issues with his feet that likely could have been corrected a long time ago.

Upon Scooter’s arrival, we noticed that he didn’t pick up his feet very high when he walked, he just kind of scooted around. In addition, he had quite a few healing bite marks on his body, but he was, thankfully, of good weight. Dr. Giuliana Marie Templeton performed an exam, ran blood tests and took x-rays. His bloodwork indicates high and low values, he’s definitely been lacking proper nutrition. Stephanie, one of our awesome farriers, worked on his feet after the x-rays were done.

It’s going to take several months to get his feet in optimum shape. He may never be able to run and play like a horse with normal, healthy feet.

The mere act of walking with his feet in such a state has affected Scooter’s joints a bit, but he’s already more bright and active. There was a lot of licking and chewing when the farrier finished working on him which is a very good thing, indeed. He’s a real sweetie.

Scooter would really appreciate some sponsors to help with his veterinary and farrier bills, upcoming dental appointment, and ongoing care.

If you would like to help this adorable little guy, just click on the’Donate’ button below. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is ever too small. Scooter may be pretty small but his expenses, other than the amount of feed/forage he receives, are the same as that of a big horse.

Missing Penny

I still look for Penny each morning. She was such a kind, gentle, and brave mare who will forever remain in our hearts.

I’m not sure what his name will be until we get to know him a bit better. But until then, we’re calling him Miles. Miles is simply precious. He unloaded and settled into his paddock just fine. He walked around to check things out and took some time to watch the goats across the street. (Please click on the image above to view Miles on his first walkabout.)

Miles’s eyes are getting softer by the minute and they truly, express a sense of relief. I think he knows he’s going to be okay.

No more wandering aimlessly around country backroads for this boy. I don’t understand why his owner wouldn’t want him or to at least, find a good home for him vs letting him roam the streets. He is a bit underweight but we will be able to fix that in no time.

In loving memory of Penny, Miles now begins a new chapter in his life. I believe he will be just fine.

Many thanks to all who have donated to help this beautiful boy.

Sincerely,
Theresa

About two weeks ago, we were contacted by a number of people who wanted to make us aware of a horse that had been wandering the streets in a rural part of Levy County. The Sheriff’s Department had picked him up as a stray animal and issued a public notice in an effort to find the owner. The horse was also posted on NetPosse’s Facebook page, but no one came forward.

The Sheriff’s Department had stated in their public notice that if the horse was not claimed by a certain date, a public auction would be held and he would be sold to the highest bidder.

Since no one came forward, the auction was held this morning, which I attended, and thankfully, was able to secure this precious soul who needs a kind human touch and proper care.

I truly believe that our sweet Penny most definitely, had a hand in this!

We are reaching out for assistance to help with this boy’s initial vetting, dental, farrier and nutritional needs. In addition, if anyone would like to help by sponsoring him for one or more weeks/months for any amount, we would be forever grateful. If you wish to help, just click on the ‘Donate’ button below.

Many of you may remember Kami and her mom, Haley, who had been adopted to good friends of the rescue several years ago. Sadly, Haley passed away during the night a few evenings ago which left a hole in many human hearts. It also left Kami with no other horsey friend.

Kami’s adoptive parents talked to us about the situation, and, as much as they care about her, we agreed that it would be in Kami’s best interest if she returned to Beauty’s Haven.

We are so grateful to Sherry and Kenny for giving the girls a great home and for loving Kami enough to do what is best for her. Sherry and Kenny will be moving closer to the rescue and Sherry will be back to volunteer and see Kami.

Kami Meets Sassy

We all figured Kami and Sassy would either get along great or not at all. They had a good meeting and walked off together after they met. I thought it would take just a little time for the girls to figure out who is the sassiest and, by the end of the day, I think it was decided by Kami that she is the lead princess.

Haley will never be forgotten and she will forever remain in each of our hearts.

Sincerely,
Theresa
