Our Rescue of Misfits II

Peggy SueThis is how our day started on Friday. Peggy Sue was down on her bad side and couldn’t get up. When this happens, Peggy Sue doesn’t panic – she just lays there and waits for us to help her. We roll her over and she usually rests for a few minutes and then gets up on her own and runs off. She can’t bend her back leg – it’s stiff – much like a peg leg.

Peggy Sue IIBefore Peggy Sue came to us, she was giving birth and her humans tried to pull her baby out. Peggy Sue’s pelvis fractured in three places. She’s a happy little mare that rules the others and she reminds them of that often. We have to put her in a sling to have her feet done, but she doesn’t mind at all.

Peggy Sue IIIPeggy Sue is a prime example of why we insist that there is a human on the farm at all times.

We are the “rescue of misfits” but that’s perfectly fine with us – they are all deserving and precious.

Dr. McDreamy_ Cricket and BillyJiminy and Cricket continue to improve each day. Dr. Mangan (DVM, DACVO) from AVS in Gainesville checked out their eyes and all is good! Cricket’s old eyelid injury is doing great! Dr. Mangan has been part of our awesome care team for years – even before he went to AVS – when he worked at UF. You can learn more about him by clicking here.

Dr_ Specht and WaylonDr. Specht was also at the farm last week to examine Waylon.

Kandi and Shaker are Home and Special Visitors

Kandi and Shaker Home_322pxWe are so very thankful to Jayne O’Brien Myrick for opening her heart and home to Kandi and Shaker! Many thanks to Pamela Zarem of Double B, for transporting the girls to their new home. And many thanks to Susie and Catherine for helping with the transportation costs.

These mares are gorgeous and happy and are settling nicely into their new home. I know that I will never again have to worry about their well being.

Jayne adopted Bo from us a few years ago. Bo is a horse that was found abandoned in a tree farm. He was left, ground tied, all day long with no water. He was being a good boy – standing there as he had been trained to do, waiting for his humans to return for him. But they never did. He had no idea that he’d been abandoned, but now, Bo, Kandi, and Shaker are forever safe with their adoptive mom, Jayne. God is good!

Kandi and Shaker’s life before they arrived at Beauty’s Haven in 2010, was a horrible one – it was a large hoarding case of many horses. Shaker survived (many didn’t) with a baby (Kandi) on her side and she was pregnant again. Kandi is her best friend – it means the world to us that they will forever remain together. This was Shaker, lying helplessly on the ground, a few days before they were released to us. Kandi, as a foal, was standing nearby with an older mare named Asiya – both watched on as Shaker suffered through colic. If you look closely, you can see the remains of others that sadly did not survive, scattered in the background.

MichieMichie and Bruce visited last week! We haven’t seen them since their last visit ten years ago! It was great to see them once again and Betsy Rose truly loved the extra attention.

Katie and RubyRuby just loves it when Katie visits with her.

BarbaraIt was really great to see Barbara over the weekend!

We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends and supporters!

Crickets Visit with Dr Bess

Once Dr. Bess was finished with Jiminy’s dental examination/ procedure, it was Cricket’s turn.
Cricket’s teeth were bad, too, but not as bad as Billy’s. She also has some missing teeth.
Cricket had an old injury on the upper eyelid of her left eye. The eyelid had been ripped, likely on a branch or fence. It had not been sutured, so the torn part of her eyelid didn’t move when she blinked.
Some of the lashes were turned inward towards the eye. This obstructed some of her vision and most undoubtedly, irritated her eye as well.
Dr. Bess removed the damaged part of Cricket’s eyelid while she was sedated for her dental procedure.
Voila! This photo was taken the very next day. What a beautiful eye!
All done with the dental needs – at least all that could be done today. It will be interesting to see how  Jiminy and Cricket do over the next few days. Their mouths may be sore for a day or so and they will have to get used to being able to chew.
Thanks to all of you, Jiminy and Cricket are well on the road to recovery!

Billys Visit with Dr. Bess

After the mini’s arrival, I noticed right away that Jiminy was quidding. He could not chew the hay that was on the ground. Although Billy tried to eat, he ended up spitting out balls of semi-chewed food.

This alone could make a horse depressed as well as cause weight loss. This is usually caused by issues with the teeth and it could indicate that he’s experiencing pain in his mouth.

We fed soft, mushy meals to Jiminy and Cricket until they could be seen by the dentist. Both Minis are up there in age – it could be that they don’t have many teeth, or their teeth are worn down, or both.

I texted a photo of Billy and his quidding to Dr. Bess Darrow of ‘Tune Ups’ Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Wellness Services to see when she could schedule both Minis. She was at the rescue in less than an hour! It was amazing!

Dr. Bess and her assistant, Ashley, are always great with the horses and they do a remarkable job!

Jiminy had no idea what was in store for him and we had no idea that his teeth were so bad. We’re very grateful to Dr. Bess for responding so quickly.

Jiminy’s teeth were a mess. He could not chew his food and in the process of trying, it was painful.

You can give a horse all the food in the world but if they are unable to chew it and grind it up in order for the body to process it correctly, they are going to drop in body weight.

There were very sharp points – ouch!

A view from the side – a twisted long front tooth had grown down over a lower one.

It took awhile, but look at the difference! Jiminy will be able to chew. However, he may still quid at times, due to missing and worn teeth.

All done with the dental needs – at least all that could be done today. Sometimes, it takes more than one visit to get optimum results. We certainly do appreciate Dr. Bess for responding so quickly! ‘Tune Ups’ Veterinary Equine Dentistry and Wellness Services is awesome!

Eagle Rare 2018

Jeanne has once again nominated me for the Eagle Rare Life Award for Heroism! Winning this could make a HUGE difference in our mission of helping horses (and donkeys, cats, cows, etc.)! We love what we do, but we want to do more and we can, with help! We want to get more community involvement in order to make a difference to more horses AND humans. We are determined to find a way! There are three entries in the ‘Heroism’ category so we have a good chance to win. We are asking that you vote daily through December 5, 2017! It’s so easy and it doesn’t cost a thing – it takes less than a minute to go to this link and cast your vote!

Also, it would make a world of difference if you could share this out through social media as well as amongst family and friends, and ask them to vote daily and share as well. We can do this!
