Lightning and Satin, the two horses that we have been feeding off-site, arrived and settled in nicely on Wednesday afternoon. As you may remember, several months ago their owner, who had a very serious health issue, reached out to us for assistance. It was apparent when we met the horses that they needed help immediately, but since we didn’t have room for them at the rescue, we opted to feed and deworm them etc. where they were until we could bring them in. They have now gained needed weight and are truly looking much better. Many thanks to Pamela Zarem, owner of Double B Equine Transport, for safely and lovingly transporting her precious cargo to Beauty’s Haven.

Lightning and Satin had their physicals on Thursday and both were very well behaved for Dr. Elisabeth D’Agosto who did their exams and bloodwork. The tests revealed some high and low values which are quite consistent with horses that have not been fed a proper diet. I simply love hearing the sound of them now happily munching on their hay without a care in the world!

Satin is a very nice mare. Lightning, well, he is just an in your pocket clown.

Both seemed very appreciative of their “spa day” this weekend when Pam and Pat gave each a much needed bath! Lightning and Satin will go through rehab and will be made available for adoption when they’re ready.

If anyone would like to help with their monthly expenses, it would be greatly appreciated. (Please note that your donation is for Lightning & Satin.)

Zahara

Zahara is a stunnning Thoroughbred mare that was born in 2007. We were told that her original owners gave her to someone years ago. While at that home, in 2012, she sustained a neck injury. Dr. Michael Porter took x-rays which indicated a fracture at C-4/5. In 2014, her original owners took her back. Not long after, the owners called Dr. Porter because Zahara was looking poorly. Dr. Porter found her quite thin and depressed. He called us and asked the question – could we take her? Of course we would!

Zahara was transported to the rescue where she settled in nicely. She was vetted, her teeth were done, and her feet were trimmed. Her rehabilitation program went well. Dr. Porter x-rayed her neck to compare it to the original injury and he was truly amazed at how well it had healed!

Zahara is a very pleasant and honest mare. While she will never race, jump, or pull a cart or buggy, she will make a nice trail horse or wonderful companion, and now, thanks to the generosity of a dear friend and supporter, Zahara has departed for school to begin her training.

Dr. Cardona (El Sol) was at the farm last week to check on Penny and Frodo. While he was here, he did a new Coggins on Zahara as well as microchipped her.

Zahara left for ‘school’ on August 1st. We’re so excited that she will be learning new things! She normally doesn’t like to load, but, as usual, Pam of Double B Equine Transport, was very patient with her.

It didn’t take long for Zahara to walk right onto the trailer and then, off to school they went!

Kandi and Shaker are Home and Special Visitors

Kandi and Shaker Home_322pxWe are so very thankful to Jayne O’Brien Myrick for opening her heart and home to Kandi and Shaker! Many thanks to Pamela Zarem of Double B, for transporting the girls to their new home. And many thanks to Susie and Catherine for helping with the transportation costs.

These mares are gorgeous and happy and are settling nicely into their new home. I know that I will never again have to worry about their well being.

Jayne adopted Bo from us a few years ago. Bo is a horse that was found abandoned in a tree farm. He was left, ground tied, all day long with no water. He was being a good boy – standing there as he had been trained to do, waiting for his humans to return for him. But they never did. He had no idea that he’d been abandoned, but now, Bo, Kandi, and Shaker are forever safe with their adoptive mom, Jayne. God is good!

Kandi and Shaker’s life before they arrived at Beauty’s Haven in 2010, was a horrible one – it was a large hoarding case of many horses. Shaker survived (many didn’t) with a baby (Kandi) on her side and she was pregnant again. Kandi is her best friend – it means the world to us that they will forever remain together. This was Shaker, lying helplessly on the ground, a few days before they were released to us. Kandi, as a foal, was standing nearby with an older mare named Asiya – both watched on as Shaker suffered through colic. If you look closely, you can see the remains of others that sadly did not survive, scattered in the background.

MichieMichie and Bruce visited last week! We haven’t seen them since their last visit ten years ago! It was great to see them once again and Betsy Rose truly loved the extra attention.

Katie and RubyRuby just loves it when Katie visits with her.

BarbaraIt was really great to see Barbara over the weekend!

We are truly blessed to have so many wonderful friends and supporters!
