Please pray that Princess has a smooth crossing. I know GMan and Solace and many other friends will be there to greet her.

She has a strangulating lipoma. She will soon be pain free and whole again. While our hearts break.

We love you Princess. Always.

I apologize – I thought this update had gone out on the 31st.

We need prayers and sponsors. We are taking Princess to UF for an impaction in her large colon. I know you can never be ready for another loss but God knows I’m still in a bad way from the losses we’ve already had over the last few months. I just haven’t been able to get back to normal. Whatever normal is anymore. Please pray for Princess.

Thank you.

Jan 15th:Tomorrow is a big day – Dr. Mangan and Dr. Porter will be here to start the treatments on Daisy’s tumors. While they are here, we would like to have x-rays done of Betsy Rose’s feet. She’s been tender footed and we think it’s time for x-rays. Would anyone like to help cover the cost? The cost will be at least $200 – more depending on the number of x-rays taken.
If you’d like to help, our PayPal address is bhfer@earthlink.net. If you mark it as a “gift” for Betsy Rose there won’t be fees taken out. There are other ways to donate via our website at www.bhfer.org. Please remember – no amount is too small, all donations are tax deductible, and we appreciate you support very much! Thank you.

This is old news but I found it in my “Draft” folder – I never sent it out! I’m sorry! If some of you already received it I’m sorry for the dupe!

December 6th

Bella took part in the traditional Tree Getting at her home in Wisconsin!! She was the 2014 official tree puller!

December 7th

CaryLou thinking about coming up the office stairs.

December 8th

Ginger is going home! Lucky girl!

Ginger is now leaving for her adoptive home! A home for the holidays!

Little E sporting his new under blanket!

December 10th

Donovan’s got a big backside! He got a treatment by Dr. Julia yesterday.

Silly baby mini donks JoJo and Jazzy are full of themselves today!

Daisy the mini donkey that is battling cancer around both eyes. She’s full of life and is so sweet!!

Daisy is never very far from the boys. They are quite the trio. Add in CaryLou and it’s, well, never a dull minute.

December 11th

Pam and I are on our way to UF with Baby Girl and Cookie for their scheduled check ups. Please pray for only good news!

The good news is that Cookie is doing great – her eyes and area around them looks great and we’re supposed to “keep doing what we’ve been doing” because it’s working! She will always have to have special attention to her eyes but she is good about having solution or meds put in them and she’s great about having her face cleaned daily and lotion applied. She’ll always be a stay out of the sun mare but that’s ok. She goes out after the sun goes down. She’s a cancer survivor and a happy girl.

After Pam and I got the girls settled in at the hospital we had to rush back to the farm to pickup Peaches. She looked distended when we left and I called Dr. Julia out. When she examined Peaches, she determined that Peaches needed to go to the hospital.

At the hospital she was examined and ultrasounded – they believe she has a displacement of the colon with an impaction. They do not believe that her gut has twisted or that any part of her intestines have died. They are giving her some time to try to resolve but, if she does not resolve within the next hour or so, she needs surgery. We’re told that her chances are very good if she needs surgery – so, we wait and pray for a miracle in the next hour. We ask for your prayers and good thoughts too.

Peaches is a wonderful little mare that used to get hit in the head a lot before we got her. If she didn’t do what she was asked to do at just the right time (she was a games pony) she’d get bopped in the head between her ears. It was very sad. She’s full of life and deserves a chance. It was very hard to leave Peaches at the hospital this evening. Katie went to visit with her late this evening and we’ll be back there in the morning.

Dr. Porter (PHD Veterinary Service) came out this afternoon to check on a few of the horses. The best news is that he believes that Daisy, the mini donkey that came to us several months ago with cancer around both eyes, has a chance of beating it! He is referring Daisy to the same vet (ophthalmologist) that took care of Cookie’s cancer that was on her 3rd eyelids and around her eyes – and he did her reconstructive surgery! Daisy has had some surgeries over the last several months and both eyes look so much better. But, so far, the cancer keeps returning. Daisy’s left eye will likely need to be removed but that’s ok – she can’t see much out of it now. She’s only 4 years old and deserves a chance. We also hope to incorporate holistic care into Daisy’s treatment plan. She runs around here with the boys and is just in everyone’s pockets. Everyone loves Daisy! We keep a protective hard cup mesh mask on her and during the day she wears a UV mask on top of the mesh mask. Oh, and Daisy is VERY vocal. I mean very.

Dr. Porter also visited with Baby Girl when he was here. He was a key team player in her recovery. Baby Girl is another little filly that believed and she overcame the odds – her recovery was nothing short of a miracle! For those that don’t know Baby Girl’s story here is a link to an article:

Baby Girl will be going back to her adoptive home in a few weeks. She only came back to FL in order for her to go back to UF to be seen by Dr. Morton. But x-rays and her exam showed nothing to be alarmed of. There is scar tissue impinging some nerves that is causing some tics around her eye. She has arthritis in her jaw but that was expected. We ride her in a bitless bridle that was made by Skips Bitless Bridles and she does just fine. We wouldn’t dream of taking her back from a family that adores her unless there a medical or other issue that would make it in her best interest. Dr. Bess will be doing her teeth in a few days.

December 12th

Prayers are working! Please keep them coming for Peaches! Peaches passed poop and gas just before Dr. Bauck and Dr. Morton were planning to operate so they opted to continue to give her one more round of meds to try to keep her comfortable to buy her a little more time. It appears they made the right decision – they are awesome! BTW – Dr. Morton is the surgeon that operated on Baby Girl. Peaches tummy has gone down – she’s up and has light in her eyes. Her poop is better and she’s got a little appetite this morning! They plan to remove the IV fluids today and monitoring her. I didn’t sleep last night for worry and what little I did sleep I had horrible dreams. I shouldn’t let my faith waiver, I know, but I’m human. We’ve had so many losses – I just couldn’t believe we were at risk of losing Peaches too. But she is showing signs of improvement and if she continues to improve she’ll likely be able to come home over the weekend.

Thank you all so much for your prayers and support for Peaches. The financial burden of this is going to be around $1500 or a little more. I’ve asked Jeanne to figure out where we are with donations for Peaches and she’ll update later today but I’m sure we’re several hundred dollars short. But right now I’m going to go say a prayer of thanks and try to grab a little sleep while Kylie is here – and Lisa is on her way in. Bob had to go to the doctor this morning so I need to call and let him know about Peaches. This is such a relief – oh – and I need to call Katie! God bless and have a wonderful day everyone! Please continue to send good thoughts for Peaches and pray she continues to improve! Thank you!!!!

What a difference since last night! Peaches is feeling much better!

December 13th

Peaches is on her way home!!

It’s really great to have Peaches back at the rescue – thank you all for your good thoughts and prayers. Some have asked where we stand with funds to cover her vet bill – I’ll figure that out on Monday. For now, I’d really like to just bask in the relief knowing that she’s recovering and is home. She’s tucked in for the night. Hopefully, we’ll all sleep a bit better tonight.

I was very happy that Angelo dropped by to help out at the farm for awhile today. Bob had to run a lot of errands to get hay, etc. Roxy and Paul were also here today – they volunteer every other Saturday. They are the adopter’s of Skye and Morgan – two of our horses that are living a great life getting lots of TLC.

Now, if we could only find a great home for Bryce and Serenity.

Jazzy is getting better about being handled. He actually walks up to me now and then and turns sideways to ask for scratches. I had to get some goobers out of his eye this morning. He’s got the cutest little itty bitty eyes.

Dr. Porter took another set of x-rays of Donovan’s feet and we were so happy to see improvement! It’s just going to take some time to get them where they need to be.

I came across this photo of Gentleman tonight that was taken in 2012. I sure do miss him. Good night everyone. I wish everyone sweet dreams…

Sincerely,
Theresa

A very important announcement is at the bottom of this email!

As some of you know, at this time each year I share a story that is near and dear to my heart. It says so much about why we do what we do, with your help, here at Beauty’s Haven Farm & Equine Rescue. This year, the story hits my heart a bit harder – we’ve lost many of our beloved horses this year including Solace, Victoria, Wally, Mary, Samantha, Genesis, Buck, Rhythm, and Gentleman. This is our first Christmas without Gentleman since he came into our life many years ago – it just isn’t the same. But I’m sure they are all gathered now, with others that have gone before us, at Rainbow Bridge. They are all waiting for that day when we will be reunited. What a glorious time that will be!

I hope you’ve experienced having at least one of these kind of precious souls in your life. If not, I pray one or more will come into your life soon. It’s an experience every human deserves.

Only for Love

The young couple had made their usual hurried, pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt the elderly parents with their small herd of horses. The farm had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine which topped the hill behind the farm, and through the years had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, but they sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at day’s end.

Crossly, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of "The Old One." She is no longer of use to you. It’s been years since you’ve had foals from her. You should cut corners and save where you can. Why do you keep her anyway?" The old man looked down as his worn boot scuffed at the barn floor and his arm stole defensively about the Old One’s neck as he drew her to him and rubbed her gently behind the ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Only because of love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. So it was, that because of the leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old barn. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire’s fury. By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife. They thanked those who had come to their aid, and the old man turned to his wife, resting her white head upon his shoulders as he clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered, "We have lost much, but God has spared our home on this eve of Christmas. Let us, therefore, climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared."

And so, he took her by the hand and helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his hand. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they looked up and gasped in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious, brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering, snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised on its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy as he pulled his wife forward. There, beneath the tree, was their Christmas gift. Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe. At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping daintily through the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under them as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares pressed uneasily against the "Old One" as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of those she loved. Her body was brittle with years, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift — because of love. Only because of love.

The boys learned about Thanksgiving Day this morning while they ate their breakfast. Well, JoJo had finished his but Jazzy takes time and savors every bite.

This is a morning dove that was learning to fly – he landed on one of the feed tubs that was about to be washed at the wash rack. There is a nest in the rafters there. We haven’t seen this one or the parents since he flew off. We hope they are all safe.

It was great to have both of our human kids home today – they are seldom here at the same time. This is Joshua and yes, he is very tall. Katie cooked a wonderful meal – she’s a great cook! We even took time out to watch a movie with them. They both attend college in Gainesville and share an apartment there. Joshua is going to be a pharmacist and Katie a physical therapist. So proud of both of them!

"Look mommy Theresa! Josh is home!"

Jenny came home for a few days – we really miss her! Kylie and Brandon stopped in for a few minutes and Marie, Eva, and Billie came this morning to help out.

Marie and Billie came and got many of the morning chores in record time! And Eva tackled the chores at the mini’s and Magic’s. We truly appreciate our volunteers – each and every one of them makes a difference. Yes, we really do have much to be thankful for!

Daisy got to go out with the boys today – she really enjoyed it. She’s a happy little donkey – she ran and played and brayed! So, now I sometimes find 3 mini donk’s hanging around at the bottom of the porch stairs.

CaryLou and JoJo both have "me first" syndrome and have to be in the middle of everything. LOL

Well, caught red handed. CaryLou was determined to destroy the "keep the donkey in" sign on the gate.

And he almost did!

We hope that everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
Theresa

Jazzy chasing JoJo? That’s a first!

Delaney and his favorite horse, Cookie.

Beautiful Donovan.

Poor Betsy Rose just about jumped out of her skin. Someone shot a gun.

Bella Update from Wisconsin ~ ‘Bella had a farrier appt today and is doing so well! She loves the snow and is getting really fluffy! She has been running around quite a bit in the new snow.’

November 13th

Does anyone know of any Appaloosa groups where we could possibly post Bryce and Serenity? They need a home and we need help networking them. Serenity is registered and Bryce is her son. They are VERY nice horses. Serenity is trained to ride and Bryce is ready to learn.

November 14th

Magic always makes you feel good. He’s just a happy go lucky horse.

Betsy Rose napping. So sweet.

November 15th

The Berrettini Yard/Tack sale was held on Saturday. Marie, Jamie, Eva, Delaney, and Kenny manned our tables – we have lots of nice tack, blankets, household items, and other items for sale. All proceeds go to the horses! Many thanks to these wonderful volunteers for their dedication, time, and hard work! And thank you to everyone that donated the items to sell and many thanks to the folks at Berrettini too! https://www.facebook.com/berrettinifeedspecialist.

"Come on up Jazzy! This porch is much easier for you to get down – only one step!"

"Shhhhhhhhhhhh mommy Theresa! I’m playing hide and seek with Jazzy and JoJo!"

Jazzy and Duke have become friends.

Mini here, mini there, mini everywhere! Ebony, Lily, CaryLou, and in the background Jazzy and JoJo.

November 16th

I wanted to laugh and cry at the same time yesterday when Mishka ran around in all his glory in the main paddock. He so very much reminds me of our Gentleman. Mishka enjoys his new freedom now that he is in the main paddock. I didn’t get it on video but he literally jumped high straight up in the air and did the cricket dance! Watching him meet Little E and Matilda was really special to me.

Donovan and Mishka meeting yesterday. They are about the same height but are of different builds/frames. Mishka taped in at about 1430 lbs when he arrived. Donovan tapes at just over 1850 lbs. Donovan being a Percheron/Shire cross and Mishka being a Percheron. They are both magnificent and very sweet. Standing between them yesterday, well, I’ll just say "I could feel the power" and it was breathtaking!

Mishka venturing out into the main paddock yesterday for the first time. He’s a gentle soul.

Don’t let his good looks fool you – he is thin and with very little muscle.

Matilda – another very sweet soul that is adored.

The trio greeting Delaney yesterday as I was toting clean towels to the barn.

I don’t know why Lucy was making faces at CaryLou but it was hilarious!

It’s very seldom you find the boys napping.

November 17th

Some serious storms happening and we are under a tornado watch. Hard freeze warning for tomorrow night. Strange weather.

Thank you all for your continued love and support.

Sincerely,

Theresa

November 8th

Magic – our beautiful 15 year young Arabian stallion that will live out his life here.

As beautiful and lovable as ever – Betsy Rose.

Eva Ponko and Josh spending some time with Athena today.

November 9th

One of the most wonderful places to be. Yes, I took 5 minutes out of my busy day on Friday to ride. Didn’t go far but it was very refreshing!

This is Katherine and Barbara today. Katherine is a student at UF and has been with us for 3+ years. Barb has been with us 5+ years and is on our BOD. Thank you ladies, very much, for all you do!

It’s not unusual to find the boys waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs by the office. I have to be careful so they don’t see me at the door – JoJo won’t hesitate to come up to greet me. But then the issue is getting him down safely. LOL! They are adorable – quite the pair! Jazzy is really coming out of his shell. It’s great to see!

Jazzy stood there for over ten minutes "conversing" with the sprinkler – or perhaps he was practicing Karaoke? Silly donk.

These boys, gotta love them!

I spent 1.5 hours yesterday getting the tangles out of Magic’s mane which is naturally curly. He’s a very special horse.

I let Lily and Ebony out of their paddock today so they could run and play around the house. They had a blast!

And the boys went exploring in the mini mare’s paddock while the mini mares went out to play around the house. Triple trouble!

November 10th

Just wanted to get on here long enough to apologize for not responding to PM’s, emails, calls, etc. today – I got held up in a couple of doctor appointments in Gainesville today and didn’t get back to the farm until late. Thanks to everyone who helped us get the refill for the fly mister system at the barn – it’s been ordered!

"Following the leader…"

November 11th

Mishka – he’s such a sweet horse.

All played out…

No matter how heavy the burden on your shoulders may feel – even just a few minutes with Betsy Rose will help you to feel better.

Rayo – he’s so loved!

Remember Cisco and Tia and Tess? They are loving life with their adoptive family!

Serenity and Bryce just don’t understand why they haven’t found a forever home yet. And I can’t explain it to them because I don’t understand it either. They are registered Appaloosa’s and are very nice horses. Serenity is ready for trails and Bryce is ready to be started.

We are looking for an adoptive or foster home for Amber with someone that can work with her and train her. She’s a 6 year old Tennessee Walker Horse – registered name is Truehearts Majic Starlite. She will make a fine horse for the right person. She’s just out to pasture here – she needs a home and a job. Natural horsemanship methods only. Adoption fee waived to approved home.

Thank you all for your continued love and support.

Who would like to buy a bale of hay ($15) for a horse? We need to buy a ton which should last us through the weekend. The larger paddocks just got their large 700 lb. bales but the smaller paddocks and barn horses need the smaller bales. A ton is $595. Yes, it is expensive but no, it’s not high for this area of the country. Would anyone like to sponsor a bale or more? Credits can be called directly into the hay store at 352-867-8333. Donations can be made via our PayPal account to bhfer@earthlink.net or via various methods on our website at https://bhfer.org/donate.cfm. We are a GFAS verified, all volunteer organization that operates totally from donations from the public. We do not receive funds from any local, county, state, or federal government sources. The cool temps are here and the grass is not growing – please help us keep hay before the horses. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

November 2nd

Cookie got a some pampering from Elizabethand Bri today! Cookie stays in a stall on sunny days because of her pink skin and history of cancer. She’s a survivor!

Betsy Rose ran away when Eva went to remove her blanket this am. Betsy is pretty opinionated and knows she gets to do as she pleases!

Mishka will be getting vetted tomorrow.

The boys are getting more comfortable with each other, although I do still find JoJo just standing there staring at Jazzy sometimes. lol

November 3rd

Dr. Julia is here to examine and treat Attagirl. She’s had diarrhea and we’ve done a few things to help, but nothing has worked. She’s going to be oiled.

November 4th

Good morning everyone! It will be a very busy day here again! Dr. Julia will be here shortly to examine Mishka – we ran out of time last night because of Attagirl and Princess. Dr. Bess Darrow is coming to work on Betsy Rose, Mishka, and a couple of others.

We brought Donovan up to the barn last night to check out/treat his boo boo’s which are much better – I hopped a ride! It was a nice treat!

Peaches and Dr. Bess Darrow this morning.

This is what Dr. Bess found when she asked Mishka to smile this morning! Mishka has an extra upper incisor which had pushed other teeth sideways. Dr. Bess leveled them up and did quite a bit of other work in his mouth. He’s much happier now and he absolutely loves his hay!

JoJo loves hanging out on our porch. He can easily climb up the stairs but he has difficulty getting down! Last time he took a flying leap and scared me half to death! I think we need a ramp. Anyone got a ramp to spare?

Calling it a day here – so glad these boys are paling around. Everyone needs a BFF!

November 5th

JoJo and Jazzy helping Kylie this evening. Jazzy is feeling better and it’s starting to show.

Please share out Amber – she needs a home! She’s a 6 yr old registered TWH ready for training.

November 6th

JoJo needs to learn to share his humans with Jazzy. It will take a little time for it all to sort out but it will. They were running around playing with CaryLou this evening – I could just picture all 3 of them following me up the stairs. lol

Cookie loves to make faces!

Little E is as sweet as ever.

Mishka has settled in really nice. I’ll update tomorrow on his lab work and what we’ve learned.

It was a beautiful day today. It started it out with a photographer coming out to take pictures of Marie for an article that I believe will be published next month in an Ocala magazine. Sadly, I had to work in the office most of today. This time change has us all messed up.

Have a great weekend, everyone, and thank you for your continued love and support.

Sincerely,

Theresa
