We have been so busy that I haven’t had a chance to share some things we’ve been working on in recent months.  Pictured above, are two Arabian horses that we were asked to take in December, but since we were full, we sadly, could not do so.  The Arabians’ owner also asked Morgan, at HPAF, if she could take them, but they, too, were full.

The mares had been rescued from a bad situation more than a year ago, but the owner had not handled the girls during the time they were in her care.  The black filly is almost three years old and had never been touched when she arrived at the rescue.  The mare, the filly’s dam, was so sweet and approached me when I met them the first time.  I haltered her and spent just a little time with her and she is very sweet.  The filly, however, was unsure about humans, but like her dam, was quite inquisitive.  We took the girls grain and hay while we searched for a safe place for them to land.  When we took them hay on Christmas Eve, we noticed the fencing at the property where they were living had worsened and was unsafe.  The girls had been leaning on it and it wouldn’t have taken much for them to escape.  The thought of them getting out and into the road was horrible.  I talked to Morgan again, and, by working together, we thought of a solution for the immediate problem.  We agreed to bring the girls to Beauty’s Haven until March, at which time, HPAF would take them.

A week before the girls arrived, and before we had come up with a plan to bring them here until March, the owner called me to advise that she had found them a home.  She had met a man at a feed store who offered to take them.  I suggested that she have the man fill out an adoption application and return it to me to process.  I asked her to not let the girls go until we did some research.  It didn’t take much for us to determine that this would not be a good situation for the girls, or any horse for that matter!  We asked the owner to wait a bit longer for us to figure out something and I’m so grateful that she took my advice.  The man that wanted them was arrested yesterday in Alachua County for using his horse as a deadly weapon!  You can read the story by clicking HERE.

These girls are so sweet and I truly enjoy the time I have with them.  The filly approaches me now and actually gives kisses!  Her mom loves to be scratched on her backside.  Bringing them here displaced some minis from their paddock (we had to double up horses in another paddock to make room) but it’s only temporary.  I’m thankful they are here and safe and I’m so very sorry for the horse and animals that the man owns (we did alert authorities about other animals that may be in his possession to ensure that someone was taking care of them).  Hopefully, the horse will never be returned to him.

If anyone would like to help with the expenses of caring for the girls, you may do so by forwarding your contribution via the ‘DONATE‘ page here on our website, or  PAYPAL.ME. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to ‘The Two Arabs.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. As always, thank you all so very much for your continued love and support.

We all like good news, right? Read on!

We adopted out two registered Arabian geldings (Derek and Mo) a few years ago to the same person. At the end of 2018, someone brought it to our attention that the horses had been taken out of state. When we contacted the adopter, they would not give us the location of the horses. It took quite a bit of time and research, but thankfully, we located Derek. He was found in New Jersey and has since been recovered – he is now back at the rescue!

Now, the bad news. The other gelding, Mo, is still missing. We believe that he is still in Florida and we will share his story tomorrow in hope that someone will recognize him and contact us in regard to his whereabouts.

The above photos of Derek were taken upon his return. He desperately needs sponsors as it has been quite an expensive endeavor to bring him home. In addition, there is the cost of his initial vetting. He did have a hooficure a few days ago and he will be needing dental work as well.

Would anyone like to help Derek with a one time or recurring donation? All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. You may forward your contribution via PAYPAL, via the ‘DONATE‘ page on our website or via PAYPAL.ME. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to ‘Derek.’ If you select the tab, ‘Send Money to Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution.

As always, thank you so very much for your love and support.

It’s really nice to share some good news for a change! And this bit of news is truly, an answer to my prayers.

Sisco now has a home of his own with another very, very sweet horse, Nash, who is out of Dash for Cash. Nash was adopted out to Sue a few years ago.
[clear]

There is SHADE, nice grass, a cozy barn, and a wonderful human to spoil them!

Sisco is a cancer survivor and one of the worse things here at the rescue, is that we have very little shade that can offer our equines protection from the blazing Florida sunshine.
[clear]

Sisco has everything any horse could want in their sunset years. He’s in great shape and I’m sure he has many more good years ahead of him.

Thank you, Sue, for giving this deserving boy a home!

Venus & Nadia

These two lovely Arabians still need sponsors to help with their ongoing care. They were adopted out a few years ago but had to return to the rescue a few weeks ago through no fault of their own. Nadia is 21 years young and is truly, a lovely mare. As you can see in this video, Venus, a 32 years young bay, is truly, “Poetry in Motion!”

We can’t do what we do without support from others. And providing proper care of a horse isn’t inexpensive. Please consider making a one time donation or a monthly recurring donation to help these beautiful girls. All donations are tax deductible and no amount is too small. Thank you.

Sophie went to keep another horse company for a few months but recently returned. She gets along with everyone and is so very easy to love. She is now looking for a forever home as a companion or trail horse.

Sophie has no sponsors to help with her care. Isn’t there anyone who would like to help with her needs by making a one time or recurring monthly tax deductible donation?

JoJo really does try to help as you can see by clicking here to view his latest ‘Public Service Announcement.’

Hooficures are scheduled for many horses next week. Would anyone like to help? We need to raise $575. Perhaps someone would like to offer a match game? Donations are tax deductible and can be made via various ways on our website at www.bhfer.org/donate. Our PayPal address is bhfer@earthlink.net. If you can help, please note that your donation is for ‘hooficures.’

Wishing everyone a wonderful weekend and thank you, all, for your continued love and support!

The only lasting beauty is the beauty of the heart. ~ Rumi

Beauty’s Haven Farm and Equine Rescue, Inc., a 501(c)(3) grassroots Non-Profit Organization is currently experiencing a ‘rough patch’ due to unforeseen circumstances. Theresa’s husband, Bob, the co-founder of Beauty’s Haven, is scheduled to undergo aortic aneurysm repair surgery on Friday, July 20th. Although this procedure could have been performed at a later date, both Theresa and Bob believe that it is in their best interest to have the surgery as soon as possible in order to alleviate additional stress. On a positive note, the doctor expects Bob to make a full recovery and after six to eight weeks of recuperation, he will, once again, be able to perform his daily tasks. As most supporters are aware, Theresa simply does not like to ask for assistance, so on her behalf, I am seeking your support during this most challenging time.

Returned Horses and Forever Homes

Beauty’s Haven recently rescued Rosie, a mini who may be in foal, and Joie, a mini filly. Both came from a feral herd. About a month ago, we also rescued a pair of hours old, orphaned baby goats, Ginger and Snap. Bottle babies require around the clock care but it has been worth every second as both are now flourishing and were just yesterday, delivered to their adoptive home where they will be forever treasured. Theresa will truly miss these precious babies for they were such a joy to behold and their antics always made her smile.

Sadly, however, three horses recently returned from their adopters, which put a strain on already strained resources – financially, physically, and mentally. ‘Rescue’ means much more than helping a horse in dire need by bringing them to safety. Rescue is a commitment to each horse for the rest of his or her life; a commitment that they will receive routine care which is quite costly. Routine care includes vetting, de-wormers, dental and farrier care, vaccines, hay and grain, special diets and supplements. And there are also unexpected emergencies. Sponsoring a horse to assist with his or her daily care is a most helpful way in which to make a difference in the life of a precious equine. There is no set dollar amount required to help sponsor a horse – any amount helps.

A number of beautiful horses are currently available for adoption and are patiently awaiting their loving forever homes. Many equines with special needs comprise the Beauty’s Haven Sanctuary Program where they will forever remain safe.

Training

Horses are much more attractive to potential adopters once they have been trained and we are truly grateful to Dan who has done a fantastic job working with Kiana. Kiana now accepts being ridden and will one day, be a wonderful trail horse for a potential adopter. Kiana’s training has been made possible by Lynda and her family’s most generous sponsorship.

Zahara, the rescue’s very own, ‘Black Beauty,’ is a stunning, healthy Thoroughbred mare. She is presently eligible to receive much needed training at an off-site facility, but she needs sponsors in order for this to occur. The cost of this training is $700/month for a minimum of two months which includes training and full care. The training spot is open as of August 1st and we don’t want Zahara to miss this amazing opportunity. If anyone would like to assist with the cost of Zahara’s training, we would be forever grateful.

Manpower

Beauty’s Haven has a wonderful, albeit small, group of hands-on volunteers who come on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 9 am until approximately, 3 pm, as well as a volunteer who works with a special needs volunteer on Friday mornings. Another volunteer works for three hours on Friday mornings cleaning paddocks, and on occasion, other individuals stop by to assist. Beauty’s Haven’s volunteers are absolutely priceless and each and every moment that they spend at the rescue is so greatly appreciated.

Most unfortunately, since the rescue is experiencing a major shortage of volunteers, Theresa and Bob have been tirelessly working, on average, sixteen plus hours per day caring for their beloved herd and attending to the routine tasks of maintaining the farm. Theresa will do her best during this most challenging time but she simply will be unable to perform her duties while taking on Bob’s tasks as well. We therefore, need to hire someone temporarily who will assist Theresa and perform many of Bob’s daily chores, starting immediately.

The major impetus in procuring an adequate number of individuals to assist with the thirty plus horses that comprise the Beauty’s Haven herd, is the distance one must travel as the rescue is located in a rural area, approximately thirty-five miles from Ocala and Gainesville. This is the primary reason why Beauty’s Haven needs to relocate closer to Gainesville, once the perfect property is found that would best serve the needs of the rescue. If anyone knows of a property, or can help in any way, please contact us at bhfer_admin@gmail.com.

The rescue also has other needs which need to be addressed – repairs to fencing and manure spreaders, replacement of tires on the rescue’s vehicle, repairs to the flatbed trailer that is used to transport hay in addition to many other farm related needs.

Beauty’s Haven has a wonderful village of supporters who always rise to the occasion whenever a need occurs. Please consider making a onetime donation or creating a monthly recurring donation of any amount to help the rescue at this critical time.  If you would like to donate to our ‘Beauty of the Heart’ gofundme campaign, please click here. Contributions may also be submitted via PayPal: bhfer@earthlink.net, via various means on our website or via PayPal.me/bhfer.  Please make certain to mark your donation, ‘Beauty of the Heart’ when donating via PayPal. Please note that all donations will be reflected on our gofundme page. If you are unable to assist financially, we truly understand, but perhaps you would be willing to assist us by spreading the word about our wonderful rescue. This could lead to new supporters, donations, homes for horses, and even new volunteers. Lastly, a dear friend and supporter has most generously offered to match the first $1000 in donations to our ‘Beauty of the Heart’ campaign which would specifically be designated to hiring someone to assist with chores during Bob’s period of rehabilitation. This would also be a wonderful opportunity in which to double your contribution!

Beauty’s Haven is the fulfillment of Theresa’s lifelong dream, a dream of helping our beloved equines, especially those in dire need, with the promise that all of their tomorrows, will be everything that their past should have been.  And Bob has remained by Theresa’s side throughout the years, supporting her all the way. They have truly made a significant difference in the lives of countless horses as well as humans, and they are eagerly looking forward to helping many more.

In the words of Theresa…

“Don’t give up just because of the obstacles. Regardless of what obstacles face you, just keep going! Go through, go around, or go over or under – but never give up!”

Please keep Bob, Theresa, Katie and Joshua in your prayers.

Warmly,

Jeanne Bartsch

April 3rd, 2018

Due to no fault of their own, Shaker and Kandi need to find a new home(s). The adopter, who loves them very much, needs to focus on her own health (prayers for her would be appreciated) at this time. She is sad about this situation but is grateful to know the girls will only go to a home(s) that we approve. We truly appreciate the care and love that their adopter has shown them.

In 2010, Shaker came to us pregnant along with her foal, Kandi. There was an older Arabian mare that was like a mother to them that we also took in – we named her Asiya. They came from a large case in South Florida where many horses did not survive. The day we met Shaker, she was colicking and it was horrible – we didn’t know if she’d make it or not. It was a very messy situation – the owner was a hoarder and authorities were involved, but thankfully, Asiya, Kandi and Shaker made it out alive.

Shaker was born in April 2005. Kandi was born in April 2010. They are National Show Horse crosses. Shaker has been trained under saddle but, until she has more experience and time under saddle, she would be best with an experienced rider. Kandi hasn’t been under saddle in about 2 1/2 years and she had limited time under saddle back then. Both were trained using natural horsemanship methods.

We will waive adoption fees – what is most important is finding the right forever home. We are full and a bit overwhelmed. We have a few here that need extra daily care at this time – we need more volunteers. While we would love to keep Shaker and Kandi together, they can be separated under the right circumstances. They are located near Bell, FL.

We need help to find these girls a good home(s) ASAP. Please share this out and ask anyone that may be seriously interested to contact us at bhfer_admin@earthlink.net. Thank you.

Fancy and Rosita
[clear]
I want to share some wonderful news! I have been praying for the perfect home for Fancy and Rosita for awhile now. While I adore both girls, they deserve their very own family who will love them and be there for them 24/7/365 days a year. Prayers were answered, and last night, Fancy and Rosita arrived at their forever home with Bernice and John who have been friends and volunteers since 2008.

These girls hit the jackpot and just started a new chapter in the rest of their lives. I couldn’t be more happy for them and their humans. I’m so proud of Fancy and Rosita – I know they will give their new family much love and many smiles. Together, they will make wonderful memories which will last forever. I’m going to miss them so much as will our family of volunteers. I’ve cried a river these past few days – a mixture of happy and sad tears. It’s always so bittersweet, but this is what we do. It may take longer to find the right home for each horse, but it has to be a perfect match. Adoption is meant to be forever, but if there’s an unexpected, major life change and the horse(s) need to come back, we are here for them. These horses are always family, a family which expands with every adoption. #Believe…

MAGICS MILESTONE

January 24th, 2018

For those who know Magic’s story, you’ll understand how big an accomplishment this is, and for those who are unaware of his history, I hope that you will gain a better understanding of his very sad past.

Magic is an Arabian stallion that was used as a tripping horse. Most horses don’t survive this horrific abuse and if they do, they are so mentally messed up, that they are most often, deemed crazy and sent to slaughter.

After surviving his “charro” life, Magic ended up with someone who beat him with a 2 x 4 because he would not take a saddle. I received a call from a young lady who had witnessed this repeated abuse and asked if we could help. From the moment I saw Magic, I knew he’d be coming home with us. He was very untrusting and petrified of people, ropes, boards, etc., and understandably so.

I was very blessed that he accepted me from the very beginning and we have a relationship built on trust. It took a few years, but now he will approach other humans for scratches. I do tell everyone who goes into his paddock, however, that Magic lives life on his terms. Nobody is allowed to try to “catch” or halter him – he feels threatened if they do, and runs away.

Magic accepts me haltering him, treating injuries, putting a flymask on him, and more. If he needs a vet, I sedate him and put a soft towel over his eyes and once the vet arrives and does what he needs to do, and then leaves, I remove the towel.  It’s worked great.

Magic has had melanomas for years which had not caused an issue. However, one recently got very angry after he rubbed it raw against a board. I cleaned and treated it daily. There really wasn’t a way to keep the flies from the sore so I considered putting a sleazy on him to protect the area. Well, I tried and was pleasantly surprised when he stood perfectly still and let me do so!  I was so proud of him! I opted to leave the sore open and continued to keep it clean and treated and thankfully, it’s so much better now. But the sleazy was a major milestone for him!

To learn more about the horrendous practice of horse tripping, please click here but please be aware that the images may prove to be quite disturbing.

A New Chapter for Sophie II

Yesterday, Sophie and I made a trip to her new home! It’s not far from the rescue and she has a new friend named Dancer. Dancer is a 30+ year young TB that lost her BFF (who was also 30+ years young) a few days ago. Their human mom raised them from babies and Dancer was very, very sad with the loss of her BFF.

A few days ago, one of our vet’s and a farrier, referred Dancer’s owner to us in hope that we would have a horse that could pal up with Dancer – but it had to be just the right horse – a special horse with the right disposition. When I learned of the circumstances, I truly believed that Sophie would be a perfect match and invited Dancer’s mom to come spend time with her. She did, and I saw a new friendship take roots right away, so we opted to give it a try!

I explained to Sophie what was going on as Suzanne helped us get her ready for the short journey to her new home. Sophie walked right onto the trailer with me. When we arrived, she walked off, looked around, and then looked at me as if to say, “I think I’m going to like it here!”
[clear]

Dancer became more animated by the second and we let the girls meet over the fence. Then we hand grazed them for awhile. When I felt the time was right, we took our leads off and the girls walked off like they’d known each other for years. It was a warm and wonderful feeling!
[clear]

I stayed for a couple of hours and watched the girls and chatted with Sophie’s new mom – it certainly didn’t seem like we were pretty much strangers. We have a lot in common and could’ve talked for hours. With every adoption, our family just expands!
[clear]

And so, a new chapter in Sophie’s life begins.
[clear]

This was Sophie when she came to us in 2015. She was skin on bones and had terrible teeth and feet. With proper TLC, Sophie blossomed into a beautiful and happy mare.

Why did it take so long to find her a home? It had to be the right home and it takes as long as it takes to find that perfect match!
