Make a difference in the lives of the Beauty’s Haven Herd!

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will be matching donations made to registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations via Facebook starting at 8 am on Tuesday, November 28th, in support of #GivingTuesday. In addition, Facebook will be waiving all fees on contributions submitted through their ‘Donate’ button. If you are not a Facebook member, you can still make a difference by submitting a donation via various means on our website or via PayPal at bhfer@earthlink.net.

For donations to qualify for the #GivingTuesday (Nov 28th) generous Gates Foundation matching gift offer:

  • Your donation must be made AFTER 8 am EST via the ‘Donate’ button on our Facebook fundraiser page(s).
  • The sooner you make your donation after 8 am EST, the better. A total of $2 million is being offered by the Gates Foundation to all non-profits combined – when the $2 million fund is gone, they will stop matching donations. Getting your donation in early, but after 8 am EST, is most important.

To meet the requirements, we must publish our fundraisers in increments of $1000 and all donations must be made through the ‘Donate’ button on each of our #GivingTuesday Facebook fundraising pages. Once we reach $1000 in a fundraising effort, we will close out that effort and immediately start the next one.

Last year, over $4000 was raised and our goal is to meet, or exceed, that amount again this year. If everyone on our ‘Friends’ and ‘Following’ lists (combined business page and Theresa’s personal page) donate $5, over $30,000 would be raised which could potentially be doubled because of the generous Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation matching offer!

What is #GivingTuesday?

Created by the team at the Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact at the 92nd Street Y, a cultural center in New York City, #GivingTuesday is an annual global day of giving that harnesses the power of social media and the generosity of people around the world. It kicks off the charitable season when many people focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving. Giving Tuesday encourages people to donate money, talent, or time to a nonprofit organization of their choice on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving and the day after Cyber Monday.

Although we are unable to adhere to the suggested months-long timeline in preparation for #GivingTuesday, due to both not being staffed to have someone responsible for social media and communication, and tending to the round the clock needs of our beloved little herd, we are confident that our campaign will be a tremendous success because of the amazing people that believe in us and support our mission.

A New Chapter for Sophie II

Yesterday, Sophie and I made a trip to her new home! It’s not far from the rescue and she has a new friend named Dancer. Dancer is a 30+ year young TB that lost her BFF (who was also 30+ years young) a few days ago. Their human mom raised them from babies and Dancer was very, very sad with the loss of her BFF.

A few days ago, one of our vet’s and a farrier, referred Dancer’s owner to us in hope that we would have a horse that could pal up with Dancer – but it had to be just the right horse – a special horse with the right disposition. When I learned of the circumstances, I truly believed that Sophie would be a perfect match and invited Dancer’s mom to come spend time with her. She did, and I saw a new friendship take roots right away, so we opted to give it a try!

I explained to Sophie what was going on as Suzanne helped us get her ready for the short journey to her new home. Sophie walked right onto the trailer with me. When we arrived, she walked off, looked around, and then looked at me as if to say, “I think I’m going to like it here!”
[clear]

Dancer became more animated by the second and we let the girls meet over the fence. Then we hand grazed them for awhile. When I felt the time was right, we took our leads off and the girls walked off like they’d known each other for years. It was a warm and wonderful feeling!
[clear]

I stayed for a couple of hours and watched the girls and chatted with Sophie’s new mom – it certainly didn’t seem like we were pretty much strangers. We have a lot in common and could’ve talked for hours. With every adoption, our family just expands!
[clear]

And so, a new chapter in Sophie’s life begins.
[clear]

This was Sophie when she came to us in 2015. She was skin on bones and had terrible teeth and feet. With proper TLC, Sophie blossomed into a beautiful and happy mare.

Why did it take so long to find her a home? It had to be the right home and it takes as long as it takes to find that perfect match!

Saving Grace

Baby Ray is home_322pxNovember 9th, 2017

Baby Ray is back from his foster home as Athena, his pasture mate, has been adopted! Baby Ray is now all grown up!  He came to us as a few months old orphan, skin on bones, after having been listed as “Free on Craigslist.” He was born blind due to congenital cataracts. The cataracts were removed at UF and he can now see, albeit he has no lenses and is unable to focus normally.

Little Grace just loves her new home! And her foster family has fallen in love with her – so much so that they are adopting her! Grace has been blessed with her own human family! And we were blessed to be able to help her when she needed us, thanks to the wonderful assistance and support from our village!

Magic is still stunning! Notice the two birds? They are never very far from him. Magic was a bit under the weather for a few days, but thankfully, he is now feeling better.

There must me something magical about the stairs to the office – I never know who I’m going to find there!

These little ones are doing so well. They’re steadily gaining weight and are very happy! Cricket never fails to greet you with a whinny!

We are very thankful to everyone who helped with their needs. They love attention and would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for little ones to love on. If anyone is interested in adopting Jiminy and Cricket,  please read our “Adoption Requirements” in the Notes section on our Beauty’s HavenAdoption Page prior to contacting us.

A Fun Day at Pine Ridge

The Pine Ridge Benefit Horse Show was absolutely awesome! The weather was great, we made new friends, and we brought home two ribbons!

There were so many really great costumes! Luija was a cowboy and Karen was an Indian – they won 5th place! I was Dorothy and Warrior was the Cowardly Lion from the Wizard of Oz and we won 2nd place! Many thanks to Karen and all of the wonderful people of Pine Ridge in Beverly Hills!

Luija (1997) and Warrior (1999) are a pair of precious Falabella mini geldings that would love to have a forever home of their own in time for the holidays. Please share this post and help us make their wish come true.

Elizabeth and I gathered up the boys and got to the show just in time.

A portable round pen was donated to us which has already proven to be a valuable tool. Now we will be able to go to more events with the horses!

Elizabeth helped me into my Dorothy pony tails and she got the boys ready.

Luija and Warrior were really good about getting into their costumes.

The weather was great.  We saw friends and met a lot of wonderful people!

Luija and Karen led the way. Warrior was a bit shy and was happy to follow.

Both boys were a good sport about everything.

Both boys seemed to be very proud to participate.  Especially Luija – he’s the animated one. Warrior is a really mellow “in your lap” boy.

Just look at those ribbons! So proud of Luija and Warrior!

Many people stopped by to meet the boys. Children and adults alike totally enjoy interacting with them. The boys tend to make you smile.  🙂

Golf Cart and Fibre Beet

JoJo Golf CartIt seems as if we are constantly asking for help and that isn’t easy for me. But we are a charity which operates solely from donations and grants and we must depend upon help from others in order to make a difference in the lives of our horses.

Our golf cart batteries have unfortunately, died – and we do properly maintain our tools and equipment. I must admit that it truly, was no fun getting towed back to the barn in the darkness of night! The estimated cost of the batteries is at least $900 (for all 6). We will be purchasing from a different source this time – the batteries that have failed only lasted about 2.5 years. We plan to purchase Trojans with a life expectancy of 6 to 10 years which will bring us much peace of mind.

Betsy Rose Birthday PlainWe are also in need of a pallet (50 bags) of Fibre-Beet from Emerald Valley. We are down to our last bag and are borrowing a bag from a friend until we can get our pallet. Buying it by the pallet, which usually lasts a year, is the most economical way in which to purchase Fibre-Beet (even with the cost of shipping). Betsy Rose, Little E and the other special needs horses that comprise our beloved little herd are fed this along with a ration balancer and needed supplements. Betsy Rose and E are fed five times a day (smaller portions) – they are hard keepers. Betsy Rose has Cushings and a history of choke so she has to be fed a soft diet. Little E has teeth, but they are so worn down, that he, too, must have a soft diet and when the weather is like it is now, he gets gas colic quite often unless he’s on Fibre-Beet. When we have colicky horses, this is a great way in which to keep them hydrated. Fibre-Beet is excellent for horses that have, or are at risk for, laminitis, ulcers, and Cushing’s. A bag retails for $41 but we get a good discount and while we do have some funds already set aside, we still need help as the estimated cost is $1100.

little-e-bio-photoWe were truly blessed to learn on Friday that two wonderful supporters have come forth to offer a most generous Match Game, whereby, all donations up to $1500 will be matched dollar for dollar to assist with the cost of the replacement batteries as well as a pallet of Fibre-Beet. If you would like to play the Match Game, you may do so via various means here on our website or via our PayPal address: bhfer@earthlink.net. If donating via PayPal, please designate your donation to, ‘Golf Cart/Feed Match Game.’ If you select the tab for ‘Friends or Family,’ no fees will be deducted from your contribution. Zahara

Thoroughbred • Black • Mare • 15 Hh • DOB 2007

Zahara is a stunning black Thoroughbred mare that was born in 2007. We were told that her original owners gave her to someone years ago. In 2012, while at that home, she sustained a neck injury. Dr. Michael Porter took x-rays which indicated a fracture at C-4/5. In 2014, her original owners took her back. Not long thereafter, the owners called Dr. Porter because Zahara was looking poorly. Dr. Porter found her to be very thin and depressed. He called us and asked the question – could we take her?  Of course we would!

Zahara was transported to the rescue where she settled in nicely.  She was vetted, her teeth were done, and her feet were trimmed.  Her rehabilitation program went well. She just needed a proper diet – there was no medical condition that led to her being skin on bones.  Dr. Porter x-rayed her neck to compare it to the original injury and he was amazed at how well it had healed!  She’s a very pleasant and honest mare.  While Zahara will never race, jump, or pull a cart or buggy, she will make a nice trail or companion horse.

Zahara has not as yet been started under saddle. She will require an experienced horse person with a background of training horses using natural horsemanship techniques.  A training plan will be included in the adoption contract. If interested, please take time to read our adoption procedures/requirements information, that can be found on our Adoption Page.

Our Rescue of Misfits II

Peggy SueThis is how our day started on Friday. Peggy Sue was down on her bad side and couldn’t get up. When this happens, Peggy Sue doesn’t panic – she just lays there and waits for us to help her. We roll her over and she usually rests for a few minutes and then gets up on her own and runs off. She can’t bend her back leg – it’s stiff – much like a peg leg.

Peggy Sue IIBefore Peggy Sue came to us, she was giving birth and her humans tried to pull her baby out. Peggy Sue’s pelvis fractured in three places. She’s a happy little mare that rules the others and she reminds them of that often. We have to put her in a sling to have her feet done, but she doesn’t mind at all.

Peggy Sue IIIPeggy Sue is a prime example of why we insist that there is a human on the farm at all times.

We are the “rescue of misfits” but that’s perfectly fine with us – they are all deserving and precious.
